Let the secrets and beauty of Lake Iseo move you
Real answers to real questions. This is not a tourist guide copied from Wikipedia. It is the distillation of conversations, WhatsApp messages and questions our guests at Villa Riva Lago ask us every season. Not a list of attractions — an invitation to experience the lake the way the locals do.
A day to slow down and see the world from above
A perfect day to discover the heart of the lake, reachable by ferry directly from Tavernola's jetty.
Depart from Tavernola's jetty. The direct crossing to Peschiera Maraglio takes only 10–20 minutes. The moment you pull away from the shore marks the true beginning of the holiday.
From the harbour, take Trail No. 1. An hour and a quarter of steady climbing through olive groves and small hamlets. At 600 metres, the 360° view over the whole lake is the reward that wipes away every ounce of effort.
Try the dried sardine of Lake Iseo (Slow Food Presidium) and the Monte Isola salami. Ristorante La Foresta has a lakeside terrace worth the whole trip. Alternatively, towards Sensole, there is the Trattoria del Sole.
Between Peschiera and Sensole you will find the Prato delle Ere: a wide, free green area sloping directly to the water, perfect for laying out your towel and taking a dip.
Ferries run back in the late afternoon between 4:30 and 6:00 pm. A small tip: as soon as you land in the morning, check the departure board to note the return time.
The lake's most spectacular viewpoint and the mysteries of Zone's forest
Corna Trentapassi is the lake's finest viewpoint. It is reached by car (Brescia shore) in about 50 scenic minutes.
Start from the hamlet of Cusato di Zone (CAI Trail 205). The ascent is steady and challenging but without technical difficulty. In 1.5–2 hours you reach the summit cross and its sheer drop over the lake.
Back in Zone, look for Brescian casoncelli (dressed with melted butter and sage) and the Brescian spit roast. Ristorante Almici and Agriturismo Val Tress are trusted addresses.
Discover the Pyramids of Zone Nature Reserve (the "fairy chimneys", a one-hour loop) and the Gnome Forest, with the magnificent wooden sculptures by artist Luigi Zatti.
The "home" hike on the Bergamo shore
Bronzone sits on our Bergamo shore, 10–15 minutes by car from Tavernola. Incredibly convenient to reach and deeply rewarding.
Choose between starting from Vigolo (gentler option, CAI trail 728/729) or Predore (steeper, 1,000 m elevation gain, CAI 708). Budget 4–5 hours return.
At 1,334 metres you will find a large bell dedicated to Pope John XXIII. Tradition holds that every hiker rings it. Do so — the sound resonating through the valley is a genuinely magical moment.
Back in Vigolo, look for a trattoria serving true Bergamo-style casoncelli (filled with meat, amaretti biscuits and raisins), served with butter, pancetta and sage.
In Predore you can relax on the lakefront or visit the Roman Baths; in Vigolo, enjoy the quiet of the little Romanesque church of San Rocco.
The rock amphitheatre that plunges into the lake
The Bogn is only 10–15 minutes by car north of Tavernola. Towering rocks drop sheer into emerald-green water.
Park in the centre of Riva di Solto and take the old pedestrian lakeside path. Ten minutes on foot and you are already beneath the rock amphitheatre. Perfect for a wild swim (bring water shoes).
The Chapel of San Defendente (674 m) offers the most spectacular bird's-eye view of the Bogn. To get there without too much effort, drive to Esmate and take the flat dirt track (40 min).
Explore the ancient village of Riva di Solto. Then head up the hill towards Fonteno to enjoy the lake view from the Giant Bench (Big Bench) and finish the day in Lovere.
South of the lake, between nature parks and sparkling wine estates
An unforgettable day in Franciacorta, starting comfortably from Villa Riva Lago. The drive south takes about 30 minutes.
Head to San Pietro in Lamosa Monastery in Provaglio d'Iseo. The Torbiere del Sebino is a protected nature reserve of still water and raised wooden walkways. Perfect for photography and a relaxed stroll.
Stop at a local agriturismo and taste the celebrated Manzo all'Olio di Rovato or a risotto finished with Franciacorta wine.
Discover the "Franciacorta Method" by booking in advance at one of the top estates: Ca' del Bosco, Guido Berlucchi, Bellavista or Bersi Serlini.
A step back in time inside the Venetian walls
From Tavernola, a comfortable 50-minute drive brings you to the splendid city of Bergamo.
Park in the Lower City (Piazza Libertà or San Marco). Take the historic Città Alta Funicular: in minutes you are catapulted into the Middle Ages.
Head for Piazza Vecchia. In Piazza Duomo admire the Cappella Colleoni and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Stroll along the Venetian Walls (UNESCO World Heritage).
For lunch: Circolino Città Alta, Trattoria Parietti or Mimì. A fixed stop at the pastry shop La Marianna in Largo Colle Aperto, where the Stracciatella gelato flavour was born in 1961.
Roman ruins, castles and the unmissable aperitivo
Driving through the Franciacorta vineyards, in about 45 minutes you reach a surprisingly rich city, full of history and character.
Park at Piazza Vittoria or near the Castle. Climb via Via dei Musei and discover the Mastio Visconteo, which offers a stunning view over the entire city.
Explore Roman "Brixia": the Capitolium and Roman Theatre and the Santa Giulia Museum. Do not miss Piazza Paolo VI with its two cathedrals standing side by side.
After lunch (Osteria al Bianchi or Trattoria Gasparo), sit down in Piazza Loggia or Piazza Arnaldo for a Pirlo, Brescia's traditional aperitivo.
Lake Iseo is ringed by mountains offering unique views. Here are the main routes:
Easy About 1.5–2 hrs return. Reachable by ferry directly from Tavernola. From the summit, a 360° view over the entire lake.
Moderate About 1.5 hrs (loop). A walk among the famous "fairy chimneys", with continuous lake views and fascinating geological formations.
Moderate 2 to 8 hours depending on the section chosen. An ancient track along the Brescia shore winding through olive groves, villages and breathtaking views.
Moderate / Challenging 4–5 hrs return. Very close to Tavernola, panoramic views over the Po Plain and the summit bell.
Challenging 3–4 hrs return. The most photographed viewpoint on the lake, with a sheer drop to Monte Isola. Steep gradients require good fitness.
Very Challenging (EE) Routes for experienced hikers. Punta Almana has exposed ridge sections equipped with fixed chains. Monte Guglielmo requires over 1,200 metres of elevation gain.
Absolutely, and it is spectacular. The Chapel of San Defendente offers a bird's-eye view straight down into the rocky amphitheatre of the Bogn.
To get there without too much effort, drive to Esmate (Solto Collina) and from there take a comfortable, almost flat dirt track accessible to everyone in about 40 minutes.
The lake's shores are mostly pebbles, gravel or grass. Here are the best, divided by type:
Equipped Beaches (with facilities, bars and sunloungers):
Wild and Natural Beaches (free):
Yes — and it is the best way to fall in love with the lake. The two main options are:
Navigazione Lago d'Iseo Cruises: The "Tour nel Blu" lets you admire the three islands (Monte Isola, Loreto, San Paolo) from the public ferry at affordable prices.
Private Tours with Skipper: Local operators offer personalised trips on elegant wooden speedboats or sailing boats. Tip: ask your skipper to take you right up to the sheer vertical walls of the Bogn di Riva di Solto!
Located just a few minutes north of Tavernola, Sportaction is a centre dedicated to freshwater sports:
Lovere earned this prestigious title in 2003, thanks to its dramatic amphitheatre setting and its historic heritage:
Staying on the border between Bergamo and Brescia, you can savour specialities from both provinces:
Cheeses: Stracchino del Monte Bronzone (creamy and zero-kilometre), Formaggella di Monte Isola and the aged Silter DOP.
Cured meats: Monte Isola salami (hand-cut and lightly smoked), Bergamo salami and the superb pancetta from the hill cured-meat makers.
Sweets and Wine: As well as the Sfongada and the Torta di Amarene, try the famous sweet "Polenta e Osei". All best enjoyed with a glass of the local Franciacorta DOCG.
Careful — this is a matter of local pride!
The Spongada (with a "p") found on the Brescia shore is a soft, sweet focaccia-like bread topped with sugar.
The Sfongada di Tavernola (with an "f") is our historic sweet bread: a long and complex preparation whose recipe was devised in the 19th century by the Panificio Pasticceria Zatti Cornelio, a historic bakery just steps from our Villa.
Lovere has excellent pizzerias, much loved by locals too:
The area is home to some outstanding Italian gelaterias:
